Located in a tree lined enclave this retreat in rural surroundings provides a get- away everyday from city working life. Simplicity with a wow factor was a key part of the clients brief, requiring a palette of traditional rural materials, blended with a modern take on vernacular forms. Deconstructed and juxtaposed shed forms, at the lower pitch of a New Zealand wool shed, spread out and across the site. The motor court, approached on arrival, directs visitors down the covered access to the main entry. As one moves through the open layout different views across the site are framed by a variety window shapes and placements, some inviting access to a multitude of outdoor living options. The sun soaked northern decks enjoy a private and sheltered aspect, cloistered by mature trees along the northern boundary.

The morning courtyard, directly off the kitchen, has been an unexpected delight for the clients, and become the preferred spot to unwind outdoors. The western covered deck captures the lower evening sun, on still summer evenings. The home needed to be comfortable and functional, offering open plan living with spaces that interact while being defined by the structure. Family life called for a modular approach to public and private spaces, with quiet sleeping spaces away from entertaining areas.
